Original DrainProtector®

Urethane Drain Protector for Spill & Storm Drain Protection

Dual Layer Original DrainProtector® for Positive-Seal Spill Protection

Introduced in 1992 as the first positive sealing urethane drain protector, the Original Polyurethane DrainProtector® remains the standard for rapid-response spill containment. Its dual-layer construction combines a heavy-duty, impact-resistant top surface with PSI’s signature high-tack sealing base for reliable protection in demanding industrial environments.

The rugged top layer resists impact and allows teams to work around drains during spill response, while the ultra-tacky bottom layer molds to uneven surfaces to create an immediate positive seal that stops hazardous liquids from entering drainage systems.

Engineered for chemical exposure and repeated use, the Original DrainProtector® delivers proven protection for drains, grates, and manholes.

Original Drain Protector® Features

Heavy-Duty Dual-Layer Construction

The Original DrainProtector® is engineered with a dual-durometer polyurethane construction designed to withstand demanding environments while maintaining a reliable seal.

Durable Top Surface

  • Impact-resistant polyurethane protects against damage during spill response
  • Resists abrasion and chemical exposure
  • Allows teams to safely work around drains during containment
  • Heavy-duty construction prevents tearing and punctures
  • High-visibility surface improves spill response safety

High-Tack Positive-Seal Bottom

  • Ultra-tacky urethane base creates a liquid-tight positive seal
  • Actively molds to uneven grates and rough concrete
  • Prevents internal and external leakage
  • Stops hazardous liquids from reaching drainage systems
  • Maintains sealing performance across repeated uses

Easy Deployment and Reuse

  • Deploys in seconds during spill emergencies
  • Lightweight enough for fast response
  • Cleans quickly with warm water or petroleum solvent cleaner
  • Plastic film preserves tackiness during storage
  • Designed for repeated use with proper care

Tacky

A tacky, adhesive surface creates a positive seal that stops chemical spills every time. A positive seal prevents even the smallest amount of contaminant/liquid from getting past. Positive seals do not allow any external or internal leakage, whereas non-positive seals allow a small amount of internal leakage. When dealing with hazardous materials or toxic chemicals, a positive seal is a must-have.

Chemically Resistant

The polyurethane DrainProtector® is compatible for use with a wider range of chemicals and substances than rubbers and plastics. It’s often more suitable when coming into contact with certain solvents, oils, and chemicals. Plus, it’s environmentally safe! The DrainProtector® safety seal has a chemical compatibility rating of “Good” with the following chemicals.

Easy-to-Use & Store

A unique engineering process allows the DrainProtector® to be heavy enough to seal, yet light enough to be portable and easy-to-use. When it’s time for use, the DrainProtector® is even simpler to apply at a moment’s notice. To use the DrainProtector, follow three easy steps to ensure maximum effectiveness:
  1. Make sure the DrainProtector® Safety Seal is the correct size For best results, use a DrainProtector® Safety Seal that’s 6″ larger than the outside of the drain.
  2. Apply the DrainProtector® Safety Seal Remove debris from the drain area you’re covering. Remove the plastic film from the DrainProtector® and save it to replace it after use. Place the DrainProtector® Safety Seal YELLOW SIDE UP over the drain, grate, or manhole you are sealing.
  3. Wash the DrainProtector® Safety Seal before storage Wash the safety seal in warm water with a non-abrasive detergent or petroleum solvent cleaner. Dry with a cloth and re-apply the plastic film. Roll the DrainProtector® Safety Seal (ORANGE SIDE IN) around its original tube and place it back into the provided box.

Cost-Efficient & Reusable

After using, simply wash the urethane DrainProtector® in warm water with a non-abrasive detergent or petroleum solvent cleaner. Dry and then replace its plastic film. Roll it YELLOW SIDE UP on its tube and return the tube to the container. The DrainProtector® is tough enough to stand up to repeated use when properly cleaned and stored!

FAQs

The Original DrainProtector® is used to seal storm drains, grates, and manholes during accidental spills. It creates a positive seal that prevents hazardous liquids from entering drainage systems and contaminating the environment.

The Original DrainProtector® features a tacky polyurethane surface that conforms to uneven surfaces. This flexibility allows it to form a tight, leak-resistant seal over drains, even when exposed to chemicals, oils, or solvents.

Yes. The Original DrainProtector® urethane spill guard is designed for repeated use. After deployment, it can be washed with warm water and a non-abrasive cleaner, dried, and stored properly for future emergency spill response situations.

For best results, choose an Original DrainProtector® that is at least 6 inches larger than the outside dimensions of the drain or grate being covered. PSI Urethanes offers square sizes from 18″ to 48″ and round sizes in 12″, 20″, and 30″ diameters, with custom sizes available to fit specific applications.
